Door County Jellystone Park

Door County Jellystone Park; Sturgeon Bay, WI Campground Review

Door County Jellystone Park in Door County Wisconsin is a wonderful park very conveniently located in Sturgeon Bay WI. It makes a great base of operations for Door County explorations and has many amenities to keep you entertained while you’re at the park. We had the added benefit of recent upgrades and renovations as 2019 was the the 50th anniversary of this first ever Jellystone Park.

We stayed at Door County Jellystone Park for 10 days in late July, and we had Scott’s sister visiting us for 8 of those 10 days. I had heard about Door County WI over the years as a destination in WI, and we were in the area for the mapping business. We selected Door County Jellystone Park for its location just outside of Sturgeon Bay — close enough to a good sized town and also in a quiet country setting.

The staff in the office are very cordial and assigned the perfect spot for us. Most of the sites are fairly small and in heavily wooded areas. Even getting in and through the park involved navigating under some pretty low hanging branches. We’re a little over 13′ high, and several branches brushed across the top of our coach. Thank goodness we love trees and are willing to squeeze under small branches if needed. The larger sites are in the pack of the park in a wide open clearing which is very easy to navigate.

We were in site 184 and were super pleased to have shade from a beautiful large cottonwood tree. The sites in this meadow area are very large and equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. Even on weekends when the campground is very busy, we didn’t feel crowded in by our neighbors. Weekend campers were all super friendly, and we enjoyed getting to chat with a few of our neighbors and learning more about the local area.

Door County Jellystone Park, as you would expect, has numerous amenities to keep the whole family entertained. Two pools and a kiddie pool are in good condition with plentiful deck furniture for lounging. There are numerous sports courts, several good playgrounds scattered around the park, various sports courts, putt putt golf, and a snack bar. Park staff have a variety of planned activities for all ages to choose from throughout most weekends. And the basics, like bath houses and laundry facilities, are covered as well, and the WiFi was surprisingly functional in the outdoor areas.

Sites in this park were mostly serviced with 30 Amp service and water supply. The map indicated a few sites with sewer but these were by special request. We noticed that throughout Door County it’s difficult to find campgrounds with full hook-up sites, and we were told that it’s due to the harsher winters and not wanting to deal with frozen sewer utilities. Makes sense to us ! Fortunately this park provided pump out service upon request for a reasonable $15.

All in all, we rate Door County Jellystone Park an “A” in the destination / resort park category as it is a very nice park, with excellent sites, and in a great area for exploring.
